How High! Or The Cioby Way! : ))

And who is our mysterious woman? A great teacher but a clumsy one nonetheless : )) Her behavior should be researched, 4 real!

One day she was just strolling with Hitler and talking about skl – he was going on and on about I dunno what contest while she was admiring the clean windows : ))

In class she often has selective hearing, she never listens to us when we have Q, but she seems to hear every single word of Gossip. But everybody just loves her b/c she is never mean or sarcastic and she ussually doesn’t get mad if we all head for a cup of tea in Gatsby. We have great marks and her classes are often a great way to socialize.

SO no complaints here- despite her gregarious behavior. : ))
Hip hip HURRAH!

The Truth is Out There ;)

In my last post I mentioned my all-time favorite writer, So I present to you Oscar Wilde!

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.

A man can't be too careful in the choice of his enemies.
America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between.

Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.

Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.

I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying.

If you pretend to be good, the world takes you very seriously. If you pretend to be bad, it doesn't. Such is the astounding stupidity of optimism.

It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is

Hoe Hoe Hoe!

Not, it's not the Hollidays, it's just my phylosophy teacher :))

As many of U already know, I am still in skl  This means that I have to wake up every fudgin’ morning @ 6:30 so as to get 2 skl on time - and yeah , it totally sucks!

Anyway, a few teachers are just plain brainless – not only do they have high demands but they also expect us 2 read 50 God Damn books on our freakin’ vacation – Are U for real ? Get a life!

Today I am gonna talk about Miss B – a true lady ( NOT – just a bitch with an attitude and many many degrees : ))
Unfortunately , we’ve had her for almost 4 years ( she is teaching when The Grim Reaper is paying her numerous visits home) and she just keeps telling us what an extraordinary, exceptional and remarkable psychologist she really is ( probably really deep down , where angels fear to tread )

She is constantly reminding us not to try to cheat b/c she will undoubtably detect us( with her paranormal – more likely abnoramal capabilities ) so I shamelessly stood in the front row and got an A+ for my cunning actions : )) Just as my fav all time writer said “There is no sin except stupidity.” : )) She is definitely going to HELL! ( but what if those guys send her back ??? )
Another great example of her fashionable imbecility is the lack of personal hygene – for God’s sake, we don’t live in Uganda where there is a shortage of water! ( no offence for those who live there) And last time I checked soap was pretty accesible to the general population, it’s not like it’s uranium! We, the humble students of CH have to put up with her dreadful stench that floods the classroom right after she takes a few steps- many claim that deodorant is not to be used because it is hazardous to our health( go Bio then, i don’t give a damn!) but what about all those health nuts who claim that God wanted women to be natural? Did God wanted us to kill eachother with our reek? B/c we would have been dead by now : ))
Once, to prove to us that she is a complete retard, she brought her diplomas and gradebook with her – who knows what she did( or better said, who she did) for those marks. I have a colleague whose mummy brings flowers 2 our teachers and he’s got great marks 2! (pls bear in mind that he is only 19 )

Seriously, it’s not my fault that a sexually frustrated drunk and drug addict decided to write his life philosophy ??? That’ß a whole lot of BS! Some ppl want to be doctors or lawyers not eat shit all day ( but then again , she already stinks....)

To draw a conclusion, PLEASE USE WATER AND SOAP ( AND TOOTHPASTE ) DAILY so as to not be responsible for the extinction of mankind ; )) And never tell anyone about Ur philosophy on life – God forbid our kids have to go through this crap!

How to sharpen your listening skills

ike everyone else, I often am accused of not listening. It’s not that I don’t try; I just have so many thoughts running through my head and can’t focus on everything.

So how can we all avoid distractions, get rid of the brain fog and stop getting lost in our own thoughts?

Attentive listening is not only a skill, but also a process that can actually help focus your thoughts and stop your mind wandering.

Like your parents used to say – “pay attention’.

Attention is the cognitive process of selectively concentrating on one aspect of the environment while ignoring other things.

The goal of attentive listening is to improve your understanding by focusing on what’s really been said and what they mean. It’s important to listen completely and understand the real meaning first, before reacting. In addition, attentive listeners have relational goals like giving a positive impression, advancing the relationship, or demonstrating care.

Of course this is nothing new. I was amazed to find out that as far back as 1890, William James, in his book Principles of Psychology, remarked:

“Everyone knows what attention is. It is the taking possession by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought. Focalization and concentration of consciousness are of its essence. It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others, and in a condition which has a real opposite in the confused, dazed, scatterbrained state which in French is called distraction, and Zerstreutheit in German.”

Attention remains a major area of investigation within education, psychology and neuroscience. Many of the major debates of James' time remain unresolved. For example, although most scientists accept that attention can be split, strong proof has remained elusive. And there is still no widely accepted definition of attention more concrete than that given in the James quote above. This lack of progress has led many observers to speculate that attention refers to many separate processes without a common mechanism.

So listening is actually an active behaviour rather than a passive one. Be in the present. Work hard at focusing on what’s being said, then digest the information.

Don’t multi-task if you are supposed to be listening. You wind up listening to only part of what someone says, or pretending to listen while you think about something else. You also sacrifice important non-verbal clues and information about their underlying meaning.

Wait until they finish making their points before you speak. Don't interrupt, even to agree with them, and don't jump in with your own suggestions before they explain what they have already done, plan to do, or have thought about doing. This includes being aware enough to stop yourself from doing any of the following:-

- Making critical or judgmental faces or sounds.

- Trying to "fix" their problem with a quick suggestion.

- Interrogating them to make them answer a question you have about their situation.

- Trying to cheer them up or tell them things aren't so bad.

- Criticizing them for getting into their situation.

- Telling them what you would do or have done in the past
.

If you don't understand or aren't sure about a point they are trying to make, repeat a brief portion of the part you didn't understand and ask them to tell you more about it to help you understand better.

I think you’ll be amazed at the difference your mind has in processing information if you make the effort to listen in an attentive manner in the first place.

Of course it takes a massive effort to concentrate for the time period you are listening. Don’t believe me? Let’s do a simple test to see how long you can focus your attention. I want you to look at the second hand on a clock, or the seconds on your digital watch. Now focus all your thoughts on the movement of that second hand. Don’t daydream. Whenever a thought interferes with your concentration, go back to your starting point and start again.

It’s not as easy as you might think. If you can do thirty seconds that’s a great start, but way short of what should be your target goal. The more you do it though it will help your ability to keep your mind completely focused by concentrating on one thing. Do this exercise every morning and you’ll find it gets easier with practice.

A great example of high levels of focused concentration is in the movie “For the Love of the Game”. It may not be a classic, although I loved it. Kevin Costner plays a veteran baseball pitcher and uses a phrase “clear the mechanism” to allow him to fully focus and clear all noise and distractions from his mind before a pitch. Maybe we could have our own phrase to trigger the thought process??

Another way of doing this might be to set aside some time later in the day where we can focus on the issues that are worrying us or dominating our thoughts. By telling yourself that you’ll devote 30 minutes, say after dinner, to give time to those things that have been interrupting your concentration. Factor this in as a daily process and your mind will soon realize that it can take time to mull these issues over later – just make sure you keep to your schedule (unfortunately you can’t delude yourself).

Whether it’s the key phrase or scheduling a later time that works for you, introduce some process that helps you focus and be more attentive.

Best Memory Tricks!

If you have memory problems, you might not be using your brain in the right way. The solution? Learn the best memory trick used by professional memory performers.

These performers amaze us with all sorts of memory feats, such as magically remembering the exact order of the 52 cards in a deck (or even several decks!). You might assume these people have photographic memories, but you would be wrong. Most of them only have average memories.

Instead, memory performers use a technique that I will call “Visualization and Association” (V&A). This is a fun memory trick that anyone who wants to have a great memory can learn. If you have trouble remembering your school work, or facts related to your job, or current events, or people’s names, or any other type of information, the solution is to learn V&A and make it a personal habit you use every day.

Even if you only have an average memory – or even a bad memory – you can still use V&A to memorize things easily and well. Small children have been taught this technique, so anyone can learn it.

How the V&A Technique Works

Most people remember images better than verbal or written information. For example, I may be able to easily imagine the different homes I have lived in during my life, even though I might have a hard time remembering all the addresses and phone numbers.

Images are concrete, while raw information is often abstract. With the V&A technique, you convert the abstract information into easy-to-remember mental pictures.

Before I explain how to do the V&A memory technique, let me explain why it works. I have already mentioned that images are easier to remember. But it goes beyond that. Other important aspects of memory that V&A takes advantage of are concentration and repetition.

If you can’t focus, you won’t remember what you are trying to learn. The V&A process forces you to focus. Why? Because you are actively using the material. To change facts into mental images, you must focus - you have no choice. Creating mental images is a powerful way to focus the mind.

In addition, exposing yourself to the material over and over while creating images is repetition. If someone you meet tells you their name one time, you might or might not remember their name. But if they remind you during the conversation what their name is, you will remember their name more easily because you heard it more than once. (Most people we meet don’t help us out like that, though!) When creating your mental images, you naturally “repeat” the details until you get each image clear in your mind.

So the V&A technique boosts your memory for three reasons:

* Images are easier to remember than facts
* Creating images forces you to focus
* Reviewing your images is useful repetition

By the way, V&A is not time consuming – it saves time. Creating mental images does take a few moments. But if you practice a little each day, you will get very fast.

Think about this: how much time have you wasted repeating something over and over in the hope of remembering it, and then you forget it anyway? Use the V&A memory trick, and you will remember the information very well the first time. And it will stick.

How to Do It

So, how do you use the V&A memory technique? Let me explain using an example. This example is from science, but V&A is so basic it can be used to remember just about anything.

Let’s suppose your biochemistry teacher asks you to memorize the most common “nucleotides”, chemicals that are part of everyone’s DNA.

The teacher tells you there are five types of nucleotides: adenine, guanine, cytosine, uracil, and thymine.

Now, how can you remember this information for the exam? If you simply repeat the names of the nucleotides over and over, you might forget one or more of them in a short time.

The V&A trick is to create mental images and associate the images together in your head. Here are the steps for using the V&A technique:

1. Think of easy words or phrases that sound like the hard words.

Examples:

nucleotide = “nuclear tide”adenine = “add a knee”guanine = “gong knee”cytosine = “sight a stream”uracil = “you’re a sill”thymine = “thigh meat”

The easy words don’t have to sound exactly like the hard words. The easy words act as a reminder. You will automatically remember the hard words if you recall the easy ones. Trust me on this.

2. Now, think of a simple mental image for each easy word. Silly images are fine. Actually they are better, because silly things are easier to remember.

Try to see each image vividly in your mind.

Examples:

nuclear tide = nuclear bomb mushroom cloud exploding in ocean waves (not silly)add a knee = adding a knee to one of your legs, so that you have three knees (silly)gong knee = hit your knee, it sounds like a metal gong (musical instrument)sight a stream = a stream flowing in the distanceyou’re a sill = you are lying sideways under a big window – you are the window sillthigh meat = fried chicken, thigh piece

3. Now, associate the mental images to each other, in order.

Again, make sure to imagine the mental pictures clearly. Imagine the colors, shapes, sounds, and movement in your images. This will help the pictures stick in your mind.

nuclear tide -> add a knee: connect the “tide” in your nuclear tide image with the three knees image. Perhaps imagine yourself with three knees trying to wade through the tide at the beach.

add a knee -> gong knee = the word “knee” already connects these two. So, the image of you wading three-kneed through the tide could make you think of hitting your knee making it sound like a gong.

gong knee -> sight a stream = you’ve already used “knee” in two images. To prevent confusion, tie the “gong” to the sight a stream image. Your image of hitting your knee like a gong could make you think of you seeing a distant stream with hundreds of gongs floating down river.

sight a stream -> you’re a sill = now, tie “stream” to your sill image. As a separate image, imagine yourself as a window sill, and a stream is flowing through the window getting you all wet.

you're a sill -> thigh meat = now, create a separate image associating “sill” with a fried chicken thigh. Perhaps imagine someone closing a window onto a box of fried chicken. It makes a greasy mess, and one of the chicken thighs gets smushed on the sill.

4. That’s it. Now, review it. The teacher asks you to name the five nucleotides that make up DNA. See if you can do it by recalling the images in your mind. Start with your image of “nuclear tide”.

Let’s walk through it. The teacher says “nucleotide” or you see the word written on the test, and immediately your image of a mushroom cloud in the ocean tide (nuclear tide) comes to mind. Next, “tide” should remind you of your three-kneed self wading through the tide. You have an extra knee (“add a knee”), so the first nucleotide is adenine.

The three knees image makes you think of your “gong knee” image, so the second nucleotide is guanine. The gong knee reminds you of all the gongs floating down a distant stream in your sight (“sight a stream”), so the third nucleotide is cytosine.

Next, the stream reminds you of the window that a stream is flowing through, with you as the window sill (“you’re a sill”), so the next nucleotide is uracil. Finally, the window sill reminds you of a window closing on a box of fried chicken, with the fried chicken thigh (“thigh meat”) getting smashed – thymine.

It’s true, it took me a few moments to type this description of what you are seeing in your mind. But the mental process is actually very fast. The images literally flash one after the other in your mind’s eye, and you instantly know the answer.

Some scientists believe we never forget anything. Nine times out of ten, the reason we can’t remember is that we can’t find the information in our brains. It’s there, we just can’t get to it. We have not made it a habit to create the mental hooks – the images – that we need to grab and pull out the information.

That’s what I meant at the beginning about not using your brain in the right way. If you practice the V&A memory technique, you will get very good at creating the mental hooks for anything that you want to remember.

At first, it may seem like an artificial way to remember something. But remember, Visualization & Association is what the memory performers use – and it works. It’s actually a lot of fun, once you get the hang of it. It really taps into your creativity.
